Awakening..............................

Just by looking at a calender most can tell the best fishing in the Great Lakes is right around the corner. Today, as I was making my ritualistic drive back from the lakeshore I realized all the falgs were pointing to the west, meaning the wind was coming from the east. A couple days of that (their in the forecast tomorrow also) will cool off Lake MI big time. Add in the rain we have had, and should be getting, the simple equations equals out to fall runs really being right around the corner, maybe next week

I have been in a daze of yard work, contract negotions (resolved to a degree), and amassing a pile of rods and lines that need to be fished. Finally today I feel like that is all behind me (even though the yard isn't done). Starting soon here I will be hitting the river everyday after work instead of stopping at Menards for patio blocks. One of my main plans is to get my wife cast, atleast fishable casts. I need to get the boat out more, and get myself fishing more.

Will hope to get more fishing related posts up in the near future, and hopefully with some pics.

Starting back up...................

O.K.

I know its been ages since I have posted anything on here, for that even had any content listed. Decided a few months back I didn't care to advertise my life on the internet. Maybe because it was the dead of winter and nothing much was going on. How many posts can I make about running the snowblower?

Spring is knocking on the door and I have some trips planned for summer fishing as well as the usual chasing smallies on the Grand in the summer. Spring steelheading (for what its worth) is upon us.

SVA and I already made an early trip to the White on Friday, with no takers on our offerings. Was damn cold (17F) when we got out of the truck, warmed up to a balmy 37 by the time we left. Did see a couple nice Walleye kicking around doing their spring thing. It had been 2 years or so since I had fished the White, its twice the drive now that I have full time residence in GR. The river has changed in many ways, but still the same in others. The flow was a bit higher than I care for a good swung fly presentation, and still pretty cold. Water color was good, tried many good flies, but I think it needs a couple weeks for the impoundment to warm up above Hesperia.

I did some experimenting with a heavier line on my Beaulah 8/9 switch rod. Went from a 20ft body weighing 322 grains and 8ft tips weighing 80 grains, to a 20ft 420 grains body with standard Rio 15ft 109 grain (8wt) tips. Made a world of difference! I have never really been a fan of the super heavy rod loads (Skagit), but it sure makes like easier. The rod casts like a dream 1 hand or 2.

I know my wife and new inlaws will probably be reading this, so I have to announce that I got hitched last fall (Oct 18th) to the love of my life Elizabeth. We dated for 3 years or so, it was/is/ will be the best decision of my life. Its been great so far. So sorry ladies, I'm off the market :). I moved into GR full time. Still have the condo in Grand Haven, sitting empty with a Coldwell Banker sign in the front yard, with the way the market is it will probably be doing just that for the foreseeable future.

Big weekend planned up at my buddy Joes (MoJo) on the Muskegon River ({the Mo}, get it?) next weekend. Joe is gracious enough to open the doors of his spacious home on the river to a bunch of Scotch drinking, Cigar smoking, Spey bums for the weekend. There should be some good pics of the weekend to post when I return.

I have also been amassing a nice collection of Salmon reels over the last year that I will probably post some pics of soon.

This summer, the Turner family is renting a house in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We have a Bluewater trip booked for the Wednesday were there. Yellow Fin Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and possible Sailfish will be on the agenda. Been tying big crazy squid and baitfish patterns in anticipation, will get some pics of those up soon also. I have picked up a 13wt, a 17wt, and a couple of big time bullet proof reels for the trip. Still plan to take a couple 2 handers for Blues in the surf.

Tastes change over time. I have hung up my whiskey drinking gloves for the time being, and gone are the days of sucking down the super hoppy tastebud burning IPA's. Also leaning away from the ultra fast/stiff rods, been unloading my pile of Thomas and Thomas 2 handers in favor of more moderate easy going, forgiving rods like the Loomis GLX Greaseline and the TFO Deer Creeks. Scottish Ales seem to be the drink. Founders, as always is a favorite. They hit the nail on the head with the Bourbon barrel aged version of their Scottish Ale "Backwoods Bastard".

Alright, enough rambling. I have a pretty high outlook for this summer, and plan to post updates as regularly as possible.
